President's Message

|

|
Time once again to say hello to one and all. Hope that weaning time is going well for all and it appears that cattle prices are much lower this fall. We can only hope that the border will open and the dollar will stabilize and the market will be better next year.
We had a real good Alberta Texas Longhorn Association 25th Anniversary celebration on the September long weekend. It was nice to have a lot of the past members come to reminisce about the past 25 years. I am very pleased to have been part of this great association for the full 25 years and able to meet so many good people that have been members over the years. I am also pleased that we have stayed an Affiliate of the T.L.B.A.A. for the full time.
Congratulations to Lenord & Doris Boyd for winning the bred heifer that was so graciously donated by Lee and Bonnie Stringer of Bon’s Texas Longhorns. Lee & Bonnie have been long time members and supporters of the Association. I would like to say a big thank you for the heifer donation and also to everyone else that donated so many nice items for the auction. Thank you to Gordon Musgrove for auctioning the items.
Until next time,
Ron Walker

MEMBERS TRAVEL SOUTH OF THE BORDER TO LONGHORNS SHOWS
|
|
|
Beginning of August, Del & Chris Hepfner & family traveled to Great Falls, Montana to the State Fair. During their visit south, they enjoyed not only shopping and the rodeo but the Texas Longhorn show. There they visited with their friends and fellow longhorn breeders. Once again, they were amazed at the beautiful cattle shown. A special highlight for the day was when they got to participate in the show. Del & kids helped with the barn sorting & showing and Chris helped with the record keeping. Thank you to all the U.S. friends. It was a wonderful time.
Ken & Charlotte Beler headed to Boise, Idaho the middle of August to the Western Idaho State Fair. While they were there, they also visited with friends and took in the longhorn show. They said the show was first-class with impressive cattle been shown. Ken & Charlotte also spent some time visiting with show judge John Gams.
In October Mark & Tina & Jenalee Stewart drove south to take in their first NILE show at Billings, Montana. Mark and Tina reported that they watched the longhorn show and met some new friends in the Texas Longhorn family. They mentioned that the show had outstanding cattle and the show breeders made them feel welcome.

CELEBRATES
25TH ANNIVERSARY
|
|
|
|
|
September 1-3, 2007, the Alberta Texas Longhorn Association celebrated their 25th Anniversary. The special event was hosted by Ron Walker at his ranch near Redcliff, Alberta. Many past and present members attended the fun and eventful weekend. Saturday was a “Meet and Greet” as everyone gathered at the ranch. Guests took advantage of touring through Ron’s pastures where his Texas Longhorn cattle grazed. The evening was spent socializing with each other and rekindling past history.
Sunday morning started off with a breakfast and more visiting. The events throughout the day included branding a 4 x 8 foot silhouette of a Texas Longhorn bull. Each guest was invited to put their brand on the silhouette and then the bull was auctioned later in the evening. Lee and Bonnie Stringer of Stringer Ranches donated a bred heifer for which raffle tickets were sold with the proceeds going to the Association. Congratulations to Len and Doris Boyd for winning the beautiful red and white heifer. The Alberta Texas Longhorn Association would like to say a BIG thank you to Lee and Bonnie for their generous contribution. The heifer raised $720.00 for the Association.
After a barbeque supper, an auction was held for many wonderful items donated by guests with all proceeds once again going to the Association. Gordon Musgrove did a tremendous job as our auctioneer and had everyone participating. The donation auction raised $1,100.00. New promotional items for the Association were also available for purchase throughout the weekend.
Monday morning, Ron once again prepared a delicious breakfast and we all enjoyed another meal together. After salutation everyone departed for home.
Thank you to Ron Walker for hosting this event. It was a marvelous occasion that was enjoyed by everyone who attended. The Association would like to thank everyone who attended and also for donating numerous items to the auction.

Calgary Stampede
|
| |
|
In July, the Association set up a display booth with cattle during the Calgary Stampede. With the large number of visitors passing through the Stampede each day, the Board of Directors felt this would be a great opportunity to promote the Texas Longhorn cattle.
Penned next to the display booth was a Texas Longhorn cow with purebred calf as well as a fattened yearling cross-bred steer. This gave visitors along with cattle breeders an understanding of what Longhorn breeding can do in the cattle markets. Thank you to Ron Walker for displaying his cattle for the Association.
Visitors from the United States, Australia, Mexico and parts of Europe stopped by to take a look at the beautiful cow and calf. Many inquired information regarding the temperament, longevity, disease resistance, hardiness and meat value of the Longhorns. With the cross-bred steer, many cattle breeders asked general questions regarding cross breeding.
The Association would like to say thank you to Ron Walker, Chris and Cody Hepfner, Lee Stringer and Mark & Tina Stewart for their help in Calgary at the booth.

WORTH A CHUCKLE

Two cattle buyers hired a pilot to fly them to Canada to hunt moose. They each bagged two moose.
As they started loading the plane for the return trip home, the pilot told them the plane could take only two moose and that they would have to leave two.
The cattle buyers objected strongly. Bart told the pilot, “Hell, last year we shot four moose and the pilot let us put them all on board and he had the same plane as yours.”
Ace chimed in, “Yeah, but then he was a damned good pilot.”
Reluctantly, the pilot gave in and all four were loaded. Unfortunately, even at full power, the plane couldn’t handle the load and went down shortly after takeoff.
Climbing out of the wreckage, Ace asked Bart, “Any idea where we are?”
Bart replied, “I think we’re pretty close to where we crashed last year.”
